The Driving Mechanisms on Southern Ocean Upwelling Change during the Last Deglaciation

چکیده
We explore the change in Southern Ocean upwelling during last deglaciation, based on proxy records and a transient climate model simulation. Our analyses suggest that, beyond conventional mechanism of Hemisphere westerlies shift, is strongly influenced by surface buoyancy forcing local topography. Over Antarctic Circumpolar Current region, zonal mean upwelled flows exhibited distinct evolution patterns since they are driven different mechanisms. The primarily wind stress via Ekman pumping, whereas both forcing, tightly coupled to During early stage vertical extension increased downstream submarine ridges but decreased upstream, which led enhanced diminished upwelling, upstream ridges, respectively.

Carbon isotope records reveal precise timing of enhanced Southern Ocean upwelling during the last deglaciation.
The Southern Ocean plays a prominent role in the Earth's climate and carbon cycle. Changes in the Southern Ocean circulation may have regulated the release of CO₂ to the atmosphere from a deep-ocean reservoir during the last deglaciation. However, the path and exact timing of this deglacial CO₂ release are still under debate. Here we present measurements of deglacial surface reservoir ¹⁴C age c...

During the last deglaciation, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations rose at the same time that the 114C of that CO2 fell. This has been attributed to the release of 14C-depleted carbon dioxide from the deep ocean1, possibly vented through the Southern Ocean2–5. Recently, a sediment record from the eastern North Pacific Ocean spanning the last deglaciation was interpreted to reflect transpor...

Greenland ice core records provide clear evidence of rapid changes in climate in a variety of climate indicators. In this work, rapid climate change events in the Northern and Southern hemispheres are compared on the basis of an examination of changes in atmospheric circulation developed from two ice cores. High-resolution glaciochemical series, covering the period 10,000 to 16,000 years ago, f...
